The club was founded in 1899 as "Deutscher Automobilclub" (DAC) and renamed in 1905 to "Kaiserlicher Automobilclub" (KAC), when German Emperor Wilhelm II became patron of the club. After the Emperor had resigned, the club was renamed again in 1918 to "Automobilclub von Deutschland" (AvD). On 27 September 1933, the drivers clubs ADAC, AvD, DTC and NDA were enforced by NS-government to merge. The club was re-established on 6 November 1948 in Königstein in Taunus.

Klaus-Michael Schneider,
The pennant was horizontally parted of black, white and red, the then German colours, shifted to hoist was a white oval charged with the German Imperial Arms and flanked by red Gothic inscription "K" (left), "A" (right) and "C" (bottom).

It was a red pennant divided by a white horizontal stripe. A white disc is shifted to the hoist. In the centre of the disc is a yellow shield displaying a black eagle, armed and tongued red. The shield is flanked by red, Gothic letters "A" (hoist), "v" (bottom) and "D" (fly), all not exceeding the disc. As the colours black-red-gold (= yellow) are used here, it probably is a pre 1933 pennant. Jan Mertens assumed the 1930ies in his contribution.
