Shield Gules, on base wavy Azure a barge Argent, on barge a lion passant Or, armed and tongued Azure.
Meaning:
Schöppenstedt was first mentioned as a city in 1345. The first local seal with prints since 1419 displayed a canting barge over two small fish, canting because the name of the city is derived from ship (German: Schiff). The fish were symbolising the little Altenau River, which had been navigable due to the small ships in the Medieval. A second seal from the 15th century already displayed the lion of the Dukes of Braunschweig-Lüneburg from the Welfen kin, however sinister facing. The kin had rights and privileges in the area since the 12th century. The current pattern was displayed in the city hall since the 17th century.
