Coat of arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a blue field is a silver(=white) sailing ship.
Meaning:
According to source river Ems was suitable for shipping from Greven to the mouth. The water was not extremely deep, therefore the cargo was transported by extremely flat ships, called "Emspünten". The sailing ship is symbolizing the importance of the harbour of Greven in 19th century.

Flag, banner and coat of arms were approved by minister of interior of Northrhine-Westphalia on 6 March 1950, when the municipalities of Greven links der Ems (=westbank) and Greven rechts der Ems (=eastbank) had been united and gained the rights of a city.
