It is a red-white banner with the arms shifted to the top.

The arms display St. Mary, dressed Argent, with the child, crowned and nimbed Or, sitting on a crescent recumbent Or, surrounded by eight 6-point stars Or and flanked by two inescutcheons: at dexter parted per fess of Gules and Argent, at sinister barry of eight of Argent and Gules.
Meaning:
The inescutcheons display the arms of the Archbishopric of Magdeburg (dexter) and the Lords of Querfurt (sinister).These arms were also used in the communist era as they are shown in Bensing et al. 1984.
