Introduction:
According to Stadler 1971 the Counts of Calw-Eberstein had been the first lords of the village. In 13th century it was overtaken by the Margraves of Baden. Rastatt gained the rank of a market town from King Ruprecht in 1404. Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm of Baden granted the rights of a city between 1700 and 1705, before he made the city his residency in 1705.

Description of coat of arms:
In a red field is a golden (=yellow) tool, the translation would literally vat conductor or wine conductor. Its image consists of two embowed vertical lines connected by two barrulets. In colloquial language it is called a Raste, which might have to do something with the city's name. The tool was used at the end of a crane to lift up and set down barrels of wine in order to transport them.
Although these arms had never been approved officially, they were in use for more than 60 years (and are still today).

Description of coat of arms:
The shield is divided per pale. The dexter side is a golden (=yellow) field divided by a red bend. The sinister side is the former coat of arms as described above.
Meaning:
The tool probably is canting. The bend is symbolizing the Grand Dukes of Baden. The arms had been granted by decree of the ministry of interior of Baden on 6 March 1895. Under NS-rule the symbols of the former states should be replaced. Therefore by local authorities a new seal, and therefore a new coat of arms, had been created, simply showing the sinister half. Although this draft never had been approved, it remained in use for a long time. The local council decided on 18 December 1995, that the model of 1895 should be reintroduced.
