The city was established on 1 July 1969. Seven municipalities, having altogether 48 villages and/or hamlets had been united by the district government. The city has most inhabitants of all municipalities in Olpe county, nearly 29,000.
The biggest borough of the new town is Altenhundem, in which the town hall is located. Elspe, today famous among children for celebrating each summer the Karl May Festival, probably had a church and a settlement core since 9th century.
The lords of Gevore had a castle in Grevenbrück. Later the moved to Bilstein. But Bilstein was conquered by Dietrcih of Moers, Archbishop of Köln in 1445. Since then the Bilstein area was part of the Duchy of Westfalen, ruled by the archbishopric and electorate of Köln.

Description of coat of arms:
In a golden(=yellow) shield are three green pallets, superimposed by a blue bendy wavy line. Upon the sinister chief point is a white heraldic rose.
Meaning:
According to source the pallets already had been part of the arms of the municipality of Kirchveischedeand the Amt of Bilstein. They had been originally taken from the arms of the barons of Bilstein. The wavy line is symbolizing the small river Lenne, which gave its name to the city. The rose is taken from the arms of the former municipality of Oedingen.
