Augustusburg Coat of Arms

Shield Azure, issuant from base a rock Argent, on its top a stag statant Gules between two towers Argent with bulbous spires Gules.
Meaning:
In the 12th century in the imperial territory of Pleißenland the Schellenberg Castle had been built by commissionaires of the Staufen kin. They extended their possessions by forest clearance. In 1324 the area was acquired by the Margraviate of Meißen. Beneath the castle a market town developed, which had a proper mayor in 1444. The town was called a city since 1550. The castle was destroyed by a fire caused by a flash of lightning. Elector August I of Sachsen caused the reconstruction of the castle between 1567 and 1572, realised by Hieronymus Lothar and Count Rochus of Lynar. Castle and city were called Augustusburg since then. During the following centuries the castle was used as a hunting lodge. The arms are probably representing the lodge.

The current banner is probably used without approval. The arms were approved in 1564 and confirmed on 9 December 2004.
