Meaning:
The village developed before 1200 beneath the castle of the Barons of Langenburg. It became a town until the 16th century and the seat of a branch of the Hohenlohe kin since 1585. The first seal appeared around 1600 and displayed the arms of the Langenburg kin. Acc. to source the lion had been armed and tongued Gules before. But the chequered lower half had been replaced by a lozengy one as a distinguishing mark of the city. The old arms had been restored after 1971.
