In 1297 it was acquired by the Order of St. John and bought by the City of Freiburg as a seat for its reeves in the valley. The dexter half is a modification the arms of Sankt Gallen and the sinister half of the City of Freiburg. The tinctures of the sinister half are also alluding to the Austrian rule until 1805.
