Shield Azure, an embattled wall Gules with port and windows Azure, issuant from wall a Paschal Lamb Argent, armed Or and nimbed Gules.
Meaning:
To a Paschal Lamb always belongs a flag, usually and also here white parted by a red cross on a cross staff, here golden. The city was founded in 1378 by Landgrave Johann of Leuchtenberg and was acquired by the Wittelsbach kin in 1428. The oldest seal probably was made before 1400 and is known by prints since 1423. It probably displayed a bell on a shield in bend, which had been misinterpreted as a beehive by Otto Hupp. All seals since 1428 displayed the punning Paschal Lamb (German: Osterlamm) on the embattled wall, which was symbolising the fortification of the city. The wall had been silver since 1523, sometimes the shield was parted per fess and the wall had been placed upon a green mount or a green base.
