web site).

The Spanish colonists called the place "Hacienda San
José de Luruaco", after the name of a local cacique,
Uruaco. In 1914, the settlement was granted the status of
"corregimiento" and incorporated into the municipality
of Sabanalarga. On 16 May 1953, the settlement was renamed
"Urdaneta Arbelae"z and granted the municipal status.
The Departmental Assembly restored the antique name "San
José de Luruaco" on 17 December 1954. Decree (of the
Departmental Assembly?) #40 of 16 December 1964 eventually fixed
the borders of the municipality.
Translated from municipal
web site:
"Our flag, created by the painter Gilberto Rodríguez Avila,
is described as follows: A green rectangle, as the symbol of the
green hills that surround us; inside it, another, blue rectangle,
representing the watercourses of our municipality, with a white
stripe diagonally crossing the rectangle. In the middle, a yellow
circle representing on the one hand the sun enlightening our
region and on the other hand our gastronomic treasure, the
"arepa con huevo". [The flag was] created in
2002."
"Arepas con huevo" (lit. "corn cake with egg) are
egg-filled corn cakes, a speciality from the Colombian Carribean
coast. Luruaco is recognized as the crdle of the "arepa con
huva". Try the recipe kindly explained by Patricia
McCausland-Gallo at <cookingresources.suite101.com>,
or follow the video on YouTube.
Both the sun and the "arepa con huevo" are circular and
not oval. As said in the description, the yellow device in the
middle of the flag should most probably be a disk rather than an
oval. The images given on the Colombian municipal websites are
often erroneous in some details.
