The elderberry ("sureau")
is taken from the canting arms of Lord Pierre de Sorel / Saurel (1628-1682).
Born in Grenoble, he came to Canada in 1665 as captain in the Carignan regiment.
The same year, he built Fort Sorel at the mouth of the Richelieu.
"Acta Non
Verba" (Latin, "Acts rather than Words" / "Working rather then Speaking" is a
motto credited to General Lazare Hoche (1768-1797), one of the heroes of the
French Revolution.
