The beaver surmounting the shield is the symbol of Canada.
The
fleur-de-lis in the center of the shield is the emblem of Quebec; it also
symbolizes the French origin of the population.
The cross quartering the
shield is the symbol of Christian faith.
In the first quarter, the halo,
diadem and initials "S.A." represent the parish's patron saint, St. Angela de
Merici (1474-1540; canonized on 24 May 1807 by Pope Pius VII), the founder of
the Company of St. Ursula (1535) for the education of girls, the root of the
later Order of Ursulines (1544).
In the second quarter, the fir
represents forest, an important source of income. Fir were once used to signal
and decorate the routes of the Corpus Christi procession. It is also used for
Christmas fests.
In the first quarter, the spinning wheel is a symbol of
crafts, a still important activity. The Women Farmers' Circle established in
March 1937 was among the first associations of that kind established in the
region.
In the fourth quarter, the cornucopia is a symbol of the soil
fertility and generosity, prone to smallholder's farming.
The garlands of
maple leaves surrounding the shield and tied ins base represent the union of the
village and the countryside.
The French motto reads "Fraternity - Friendship
- Generosity".
