About the Flag

Instituto de Genealogia de Santa Catarina (INGESC) was established on 13 July 2006 in Florianópolis.
The aim of INGESC is to promote and foster genealogical studies, especially in Santa Catarina and Brazil, as well as studies in related disciplines applied to genealogy, such as history, heraldry, paleography, computer science and archival science.

The flag of INGESC, designed by member Elpidio Novaes Filho, is composed of thirteen red and white stripes, charged in the center with a white lozenge inscribing the institute's coat of arms.

The coat of arms is "Argent flanched gules (red) in base an oak vert (green) in chief the Southern Cross composed of five eight-pointed stars azure (blue). On each flanch a Catherine wheel or. The shield supported by two pomegranates proper fructed or. The shield surmounted by a scroll inscribed 'QUAESTIO ORIGINIS'. Beneath the shield a yellow cartouche inscribed 'INGESC' ".

The colors refer to the flag of Santa Catarina. Their symbolic interpretation is based on Salvador de Moya ("Biblioteca genealogica latina: simbologia heraldica", 1961).

Or is a symbol of benignity, clemency, justice, wealth, nobleness, splendor and glory.
Argent is a symbol of humility, innocence, purity, truth, temperance, integrity, eloquence and triumph over foes without shedding blood.
Gules (red) is a symbol of honor, nobleness, highness, gallantry, generosity, intrepidity and valiance in battles.
Vert (green) is a symbol of hope, honor, courtesy, civility, abundance, friendship and glee.
Blue (azure) is a symbol of justice, perseverance, zeal, loyalty, vigilance and patriotic love.

The stripes represent the 13 counties existing in Santa Catarina in 1895, 113 years ago*.
The eradicated oak, the life's tree, represents INGESC's interest in the search of origins and roots.
The Southern Cross geographically locates Santa Catarina and highlights its austral characteristic.
Catherine's wheel is yet another reference to Santa Catarina, the road being St. Catherine's martyr tool.
The pomegranate is a symbol of union and concord, meaning people's union and the resulting prosperity.
The Latin motto reads "Search of the origins".
