About the Flag

The municipality of Nova Granada (19,180 inhabitants in 2010; 53,190 h) is located in far northern São Paulo State, 35 km of the border with Minas Gerais, here river Rio Grande, and 475 km of São Paulo. The municipality is made of the town of Nova Granada proper, of the districts of Ingás, Mangaratu and Onda Branca, and of the settlements of Pousada das Garças and Fazenda Agro-Rio.

Nova Granada was founded on 4 September 1911 by Francisco dos Santos, who originated from Vila Bela. The name of the town was coined by colonists originating from the region of Estação Granada (today, Rosário), near Bebedouro. The municipality of Nova Granada was established by State Law No. 2,090 of 19 December 1925, seceding from Rio Preto, and inaugurated on 2 March 1926.

The flag of Nova Granada is light blue with four white rays forming a saltire. In the middle of the flag is placed a white disk charged with a blue lion holding a torch, surmounted by the municipality's name in blue letters. The flag hoisted outdoors in front of the Town Hall in January 2013 has a darker shade of blue.

In April 2007, the mayor of the time, Aparecido Donizete Marteli, proposed to add the red colour to the flag, claiming that red; already present on the municipal coat of arms, should be added to the list of the official colours of the municipality. The opponents said that red was indeed the colour of PT, the Mayor's party. The Municipal Council approved the controversial proposal, which does not seem to have been applied.
