Ibiúna is named for the Tupi-Guarani words "ybi", "the soil", and "una", "black, dark". Originally known as Una, the municipality was renamed Ibiúna on 30 November 1944 by State Decree-Law No. 14,334 - there was already a municipality named Una in Bahia State. Una was founded by Captain Salvador Leonardo Rolim de Oliveira, owner of the Old Una Estate. The parish of Nossa Senhora das Dores de Una was established on 29 August 1811, with lands formerly belonging to the parishes of Sorocaba, Cotia, Parnaíba and São Roque.
The flag and arms of Ibiúna are prescribed by Law No. 595 of 21 March 2001.
The flag is horizontally divided blue-white-green with the municipal coat of arms in the middle.

The coat of arms is "Portuguese, classical rounded-off shield, tierced per fess, 1a. Azure a windsurf and a fishing rod, 1b. Azure a Christian cross marron, 1 c. Azure an electricity pylon [argent], 2. Azure three herons proper terraced vert, 3. Vert a fess wavy argent representing river Una. The shield supported dexter by a plant of tomato flowered and fructed proper and sinister by a plant of potato proper. The shield surmounted by a traditional municipal, eight- towered mural crown [argent ports gules]. Below the shield a scroll azure inscribed with the toponym 'IBIUNA' surrounded by the years '1811' and '1857' all argent."
Azure represents the historical traditions of Ibiúna, emphasizing the nobleness, zeal and loyalty of Captain Salvador Leonardo de Oliveira, the founder of the parish of Nossa Senhora das Dores de Una. It also represents the blue sky and the exuberant natural resources of the place. The canton is charged with the heraldic symbols of the Ibiúna Tourist Resort. The cross recalls the Christian faith of the founder. The pylon represents strength and energy supplied to the inhabitants by the Furnas power plant. Vert is a symbol of hope and promising harvests. Argent is a symbol of whiteness, humility, justice and purity. The fess wavy represents river Una, which has its source in the Serra do Salto mountains, crosses the municipality, and joins with rivers Sorocabussu and Sorocamirim, at the origin of the Itupararanga Dam. Tomato and potato represent horticulture. The years on the scroll recall the foundation and political emancipation of the town, respectively.
