The municipality of São João do Oeste (6,285 inhabitants in 2010; 16,365 ha) is located on the border with Rio Grande do Sul, 700 km west of of Florianópolis.

The flag and arms of São João do Oeste are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 61
promulgated on 26 April 1993.
Article 2.
The municipal coat of arms
has the following meaning, elements and details.
a) On a scroll placed
beneath the shield the date of emancipation of the municipality; "12.12.1991" at
the end, and the toponym "São João do Oeste - SC" in the center. São João do
Oeste was separated from Itapiranga and, partially, from Mondaí by Law No. 8,475
b) On the shield's external borders
Left, a maize plant, with two robust
maturing cobs, characterizing the municipality's fertile soil.
Right, a bean
plant with maturing pods, representing one of the municipality's main crops.
c) The shield is subdivided in irregular parts symbolizing the main sources of
income in São João do Oeste.
In the upper left quarter, a red tractor plowing
the fertile and productive soil, with greening heights in the background under a
bluish sky.
In the upper right center a reforested area, whose timber will be
processed in the municipality, generating income without destroying the
rainforest; a gray crown with the red symbol of industry in the center,
symbolizing industry in the municipality.
In the irregular left triangle, the
symbol of sericiculture, represented by a silkworm, one of the new sources of
income of the new municipality.
In the right triangle a milk cow and a milk
cask symbolizing another source of income.
Below, left, yellow tobacco
leaves, ripe wheat plants and potatoes, representing the main crops.
In the
lower right quarter, a bovine and a pig, representing animal breeding, with two
poultry heads, sources of income for São João do Oeste's breeders.
d) The
yellow crown placed above the shield is subdivided into three towers symbolizing
force, unity and commitment.
Article 3.
The municipal flag of São João
do Oeste has five colors:
- Celestial blue
- Red
- Yellow
- Green
- White.
§1. The colors have the following meaning.
a) The blue stripe in
the flag's upper part represents the sky, being also one of the colors of the
flag of Brazil. The regular stripe is 5.44 units in width on 20 units in length.
b) The two red stripes surrounding the central yellow stripe and charged with
the coat of arms symbolize courage, force, valiance and self-confidence,
representing also one of the colors of the flag of the state. Each stripe is
0.75 unit in width on 20 units in length.
c) The central yellow stripe
charged with the coat of arms symbolizes wealth and is a color of the national
flag. It is 1.56 unit in width on 20 units in length.
d) The lower flag green
stripe symbolizes fields, forests, agriculture and reforestation; it is the
symbolic color of hope, and also one of the colors of the national and state
flags. It is 5.44 unit in width and 20 units in length.
e) The white circle
of 7.78 units in diameter charged with the municipal coat of arms represents
peace and harmony, white being also one of the colors of the national and state
flags.
