The municipality of Petrolândia (6,406 inhabitants in 2000; 30,503 ha) is
located 180 km west of Florianópolis and 40 km south of Rio do Sul.
Petrolândia was settled in 1915 by families of German origin coming from the
south of the state. The district of Alto Perimbó, named for river Perimbó (in
Tupi-Guarani, "hollow"), was established in 1934 within the municipality of Bom
Retiro. In 1948, it was renamed to Perimbó and incorporated into the new
municipality of Ituporanga.
The municipality of Petrolândia was established
by State Law No. 837 promulgated on 26 July 1962.
Petrolândia is named
for three oil drillings performed at the time of municipal emancipation.
Drilling No. 1, performed until a depth of 1,820 m in Alto Barra Nova, 8 km from
the downtown, was successful. The second drilling, performed in Rio Galego, and
the third, performed in Serra Grande, were unsuccessful.

The flag and arms of Petrolândia are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 335
promulgated on 4 October 1977.
The symbols were designed by Frederico de
Sousa.
The coat of arms of the municipality, of rounded-off style, aka
Portuguese, has the following composition.
A five-tower crown representing
the imperial period, when Brazilian municipalities were established.
A star
meaning hope. Its green color represents plants and agriculture.
The
mountains recall the municipality's first name.
The underground, represented
by the black color, symbolizes oil found in the deepest layers.
