The municipality of Içara (57,247 inhabitants in 2019; 22,893 ha) is located
180 km south of Florianópolis.
The town is named for the içara / juçara palm
tree, Euterpe edulis Martius; as highlighted by the Latin epithet
edulis (edible), içara was widely harvested for hearts of palm, which
caused the near-extinction of the species in the wild.
Içara was mostly
settled by Italian immigrants established around 1920 at Km 47 of the newly
built railway. Km 47 was made a district of Criciúma in 1944, separating from
the district of São Sebastião, which had been established in 1933.
The
municipality of Içara was established on 20 December 1961 and inaugurated on 30
December 1961.
