Municipality

The municipality of Araranguá (68,228 inhabitants in 2019; 30,330 ha) is located 215 km south-west of Florianópolis.

The municipality was established on 3 April 1880, separating from Laguna, and inaugurated in February 1883.

Description of the Flag

The flag of Araranguá is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 547 promulgated on 28 November 1972.

Article 1.
The flag of the municipality of Araranguá is rectangular, charged in the center with the coat of arms of the municipality and composed of the following colors: An upper, blue stripe, wider, representing oceanic water that baths the shore; a lower, yellow stripe, of the same width as the upper one, representing the beauty of the beaches; two inner stripes, narrower than the outer ones, representing the integration of Araranguá in Santa Catarina's developing progress.

The coat of arms of Araranguá is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 512 promulgated on 3 November 1971.

Article 1.
The municipality's official symbol, or coat of arms, shall have the following characteristics and writings.
a) A shield-shaped design.
b) Surmounting the shield a four-towered mural crown representing the town and the county.
c) The shield placed above a a scroll inscribed "03-04-1980", the date of elevation to a municipality of the old district part of Campinas.
d) Between the scroll and the shield a representation of river Araranguá and of the marine fauna.
e) As supporters a rice and a cassava plants, the basic products of agriculture in the municipality.
f) A cogwheel with two chimneys representing commerce and industry.
g) To separate the fields, two streets symbolizing the town's name.
h) In the lower field, the sea and Morro dos Conventos, representing tourism and Araranguá's origin.
