The municipality of Silveira Martins (2,481 inhabitants in 2017; 11,929 ha)
is located 300 km north-west of Porto Alegre.
Silveira Martins is known
as the Cradle of the Fourth Colony, for having received the Italian immigrants
who established the 4th Nucleus of Italian Immigration in Rio Grande do Sul. The
other nuclei were Caixas do Sul, Bento Gonçalves and Garibaldi.
The first
settlers arrived on 19 May 1877, mostly from Venetia. The municipality of
Silveira Martins was established on 11 December 1987, separating from Santa
Maria.

The flag of Silveira Martins is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 71
promulgated on 28 November 1990.
Article 1.
The flag of the
municipality of Silveira Martins is composed of a rectangular panel of 1.40 m on
1.14 m, charged with two united rectangles of 1,00 m on 0.30 m, whose external
lines project to the center, open up and form two points in the upper and lower
parts, referring to North and South directions.
I - The greater rectangle is
white, while the superimposed rectangles are red and green.
II - The coat of
arms of the municipality is applied on the internal rectangles.

The coat of arms of Silveira Martins is
prescribed by Municipal Law No. 70 promulgated on 28 November 1990.
Article 1.
I - A shield in classical Flemish-Iberian style surmounted by a
four-towered golden-yellow mural crown (when for the county seat, one more).
II - In the shield's central part the tower of the St. Anthony of Padua church,
in white, between two green hills.
III - At the tower's left, two deer, a
shell-shaped sun.
IV - A waterfall running down from the mountain's top, in
base a watermill wheel charged with two colonial plots, the red pointing to the
north, to Italy, the green pointing to the south, to Brazil.
V - A golden
yellow scroll inscribed in black with the toponym "Silveira Martins" surrounded
by years "1877-1987".
VI - The shield supported left by a green grapevine
with red grapes and right by a green potato plant.

The St. Anthony of Padua church of Silveira Martins is the only church
in Latin America with a cylindrical tower.
