The municipality of Sarandi (22,632 inhabitants in 2012; 35,336 ha) is
located on the border with Santa Catarina state, 100 km north of Porto Alegre.
The municipality is composed of the districts of Sarandi (seat), Barreirinho,
Ati-açu and Novo Sarandi.
Sarandi was settled in 1918 by the Gomes,
Schering & Sturm Company, which sold plots to Italian colonists. The first
settlers were established on 3 March 1919.
The municipality of Sarandi was
established on 27 June 1939 and inaugurated on 1 January 1940.

The flag of Sarandi is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 1,553 promulgated on
29 August 1975.
Article 1.
The flag of the municipality shall be
white, charged in the central part with the municipal coat of arms prescribed by
Law No. 988 promulgated on 18 June 1988.
Article 2.
The features of
the flag of the municipality obey the following rules.
I - The flag's width
is 14 units.
II - The flag's length is 20 units.
III - In the center shall
be placed the coat of arms of the municipality.
IV - The arrangement of the
coat of arms shall obey the following norms.
a) Its center shall be placed
exactly in the middle of the 20-units length and its lower part shall reach the
4th unit of its the flag's width.
b) In the flag's length, the coat of arms
shall be 6 units in length, from the 8th to the 13th unit.
Article 3.
The two sides of the flag shall be exactly equivalent, mirroring each other.

The coat of arms of Sarandi is prescribed by
Municipal Law No. 1988 promulgated on 18 June 1964.
Article 1.
A
shield divided in a field and two quarters, two scrolls and one sector. The
field aims at representing the municipality's symbols and history. On a
background or five stars representing the areas separated from the municipality
to establish the municipalities of Nonoal, Liberato Salzano, Ronda Alta,
Constantina and Rondinha. An Indian head-dress as a tribute to the lords who
owned the land, acquired by conquest right, whose descendants still live in
small groups in the municipality. A conquistador cross, as a tribute to the
pioneers who established the first sheds of the old cattle ranches and to those
who penetrated the land in search of easy access ways to Curitiba. In the upper
part, a blue scroll recalling river Uruguai, near which the municipality of
Sarandi was originally established. An orange scroll representing Santa Catarina
state, whose territory is adjacent to the municipality. In the first quarter, a
pig on a plowed field, as a tribute to pig breeding, one of the powers of the
local economy. The plowed field represents proper production. In the second
quarter, a maize cob symbolizing the important production of maize. The two
quarters on a white field with the writing "prata de casa". A green sector
representing agriculture organized as the base of the municipality's emergence,
and promising industry represented by a cogwheel or. The shield supported by two
wheat spikes, two soybean plants and a bunch of grapes, symbolizing the most
significant crops. A stylized wavy stripe, in the colors of Rio Grande do Sul
inscribed with the motto "DIGNITAS IN LABORE" and the date of political
emancipation. The shield surmounted by a mural crown argent with three
fortresses, symbol of the town, the fortresses representing the districts.
