The municipality of São José do Inhacorá (2,200 inhabitants in 2010; 7,670
ha) is located 500 km north-west of Porto Alegre.
São José do Inhacorá
is named for its patron saint, St. Joseph, and the Tupi-Guarani word
"inhacorá", meaning "a place surrounded by nature"; The place was first settled
in 1923 by German colonists.
The district of São José do Inhacorá was
established within Três de Maio by Municipal Law No. 4 promulgated on 5 October
1948. The municipality of São José do Inhacorá was established by State Law
No. 9,592 promulgated on 20 March 1992.

The flag of São José do Inhacorá is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 40
promulgated on 27 April 1993.
Article 1.
The flag of the municipality
of São José do Inhacorá shall be:
I. Rectangular, 20 units in length on 14
units in width.
a) In length: From unit 0 to unit 5, in the upper part, red,
from unit 0 to unit 5, in the lower part, blue, and from unit 5 to unit 20,
white.
b) in width: From the left side, from unit 0 to unit 9, blue, and red
from unit 9 to unit 14. On the right side, the 14 units are white.
II. The
coat of arms of the municipality shall be printed or embroidered in full colors
on the flag's white part.

The coat of arms of São José do Inhacorá is
prescribed by Municipal Law No. 66 promulgated on 14 September 1993.
Article 1.
A shield divided into two parts. In chief, the Liberty sun with
bright rays recalls the first stanza of Brazil's national anthem. The chapel,
the three crosses and the St. Joseph church recall the town's name. In base, the
blue river and sky highlight the landscape and provide life to agriculture and
cattle"-breeding in the rural area, the base of the municipality's economical
development. The three-towered mural crown or symbolizes the sovereignty of a
town that had to be defended with most honor by its government. Beneath the
shield a scroll argent inscribed in black (sable) 20/03 - SÃO JOSÉ DO INHACORA
- RS 1992". The shield surrounded by soybean and maize plants stressing that the
base of the municipality's income is agriculture.
Article 3.
This Law
abrogates Municipal Law No. 39 promulgated on 27 April 1993 [which prescribed
the first municipal arms].
