The municipality of São João da Urtiga (4,726 ihabitants in 2010; 17,118 ha)
is located 400 km north of Porto Alegre.
São João da Urtiga was settled
in 1902 by Italian colonists coming from Antônio Prado, Veranópolis, Flores da
Cunha, Garibaldi and Caxias do Sul, who were subsequently joined by Poles. The
place was named for nettles ("urtigas", from Latin "urtica") and for
the St John the Baptist parish of Sananduva, to which it belonged at the time.
The municipality of São João da Urtiga was established by State Law No. 8,448
promulgated on 15 November 1988 and inaugurated on 1 January 1989.
