Municipality

The municipality of Santo Augusto (13,968 inhabitants; 46,802 ha) is located 350 km north-west of Porto Alegre. The municipality is composed of the districts of Santo Augusto, Nossa Senhora de Fátima (est. by Municipal Law No. 1,271 promulgated on 27 June 1996), Pedro Paiva (est. by Municipal Law No. 201 promulgated on 31 August 1965), Rincão dos Paivas (est. by Municipal Law No. 1,271 promulgated on 27 June 1996), and Santo Antônio (est. by Municipal Law No. 10 promulgated on 1 April 1963).

Santo Augusto originates in the establishment in 1918 of a shop along the road connecting the Military Colony of Alto Uruguai to Ijuí and Catuípe. Santo Augusto was elevated to a district of Palmeira by Municipal Act No. 24 issued on 28 October 1928 and transferred to the newly established municipality of Três Passos by State Decree-Law No. 720 promulgated on 29 December 1944.
The municipality of Santo Augusto was established by State Law No. 3,721 promulgated on 17 February 1959 and inaugurated on 30 May 1959.

Symbols

The flag of Santo Augusto is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 563 promulgated on 6 May 1980.

Article 2.
The flag of Santa Augusto shall be white, red, yellow and green, white and yellow forming two trapezoids, with vertical lines connecting their inner and outer angles, respectively, red and green forming two scalene triangles with one side connecting to the upper and lower sides, respectively, representing:
a) White, peace and faith of the Santo Augusto community.
b) Red, the people's manpower and bravery.
c) Green, the greening fields and agriculture.
d) Yellow, the resources provided by the land through rural activities.
In the center of the white trapezoid, at the flag's outer end, shall be placed the coat of arms of the municipality.

Article 3.
The flag's features shall obey the following rules.
I. The flag's width shall be 12 units.
II. The flag's length shall be 18 units.

VII. In the center of the white trapezoid, the coat of arms of the municipality in full colors, 4 units in length on 5 units in width, distant of 1 unit fro the flag's inner end and 3.5 units from the flag's upper and lower ends.

The coat of arms of Santo Augusto is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 347 promulgated on 9 October 1972.

Article 2.
A Portuguese shield, per fess, or, red (gules) and green. First sinister the Southern Cross gules, representing the sky, the municipal resources and Brazilian unity, the Southern Cross being the national symbol; second, gules a tractor in the center, representing the municipality's fertile soil and the title "Pérola Região Celeiro"; third, the municipality's green hills and river Turvo's waterfall argent, gushing forth water argent down to the shield's base.
The shield supported dexter by a wheat plant or and sinister by a soybean plant of the same.
A scroll gules inscribed in black "SANTO AUGUSTO DA REGIÃO CELEIRO", 30-05-59.
The shield surmounted by a four-towered mural crown argent, symbol of a "cidade" and of municipal autonomy.
