Municipality

The municipality of Santa Clara do Sul (6,603 inhabitants in 2019; 8,675 ha) is located 140 km north-west of Porto Alegre.

Santa Clara do Sul is named for Fazenda Santa Clara, established in 1869 by Antônio Fialho de Vargas, who named the domain for his daughter, Sister Clara de Santa Estanislau da Congregação de Maria (born Maria Clara Fialho de Vargas).
On 28 May 1895, during the Federalist Revolution, the colonists led by Colonel José Diel and Nicolau Klien, defeated Zeca Ferreira's band. Santa Clara was elevated to the 2nd district of Lajeado in 1914. Renamed to Inhuverá (in Tupi-Guarani, "a shining field") in 1945, Santa Clara retrieved its original name in 1948.
The municipality of Santa Clara do Sul was established by Municipal Law No. 9,621 promulgated on 20 March 1992.

The flag of Santa Clara do Sul is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 542 promulgated on 4 May 1999.

Article 3.
The format of the flag of the municipality, compliant with the Federal relevant legislation, has three stripes arranged vertically, from left to right starting from the hoist, red, white and green, being charged in the center with the coat of arms of the municipality in the colors approved by Law No. 26 promulgated on 10 May 1993.

The coat of arms of Santa Clara do Sul is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 25 promulgated on 10 May 1993.

Article 1.
A Portuguese shield, plain, surmounted by the arch of the parish church or. On top, a road heading to the sun, brown and red, respectively, and a blue sky. In the center, a factory or and, in the background, the Santa Clara mountains in green. In base, a plantation, green and brown, A red scroll charged with black letters and numerals. The shield surrounded by two arms crossed, in black.

Interpretation.
The Portuguese shield symbolizes the Portuguese origin of the nation. The arch, localized in front of the parish church, represents the religious feelings of Santa Clara's population. The road heading to the sun means the municipality's progress. The factory represents a strong source of income. In the background, the (green) mountains symbolizes Santa Clara's abundant vegetation. The green and brown plantation symbolizes another strong source of income, agriculture. The date inscribed of the scroll is the day, month and year of the Law that created the municipality. The crossed arms are an historic reminiscence to the brave people who fought for Santa Clara. In top, the sun shining in the blue sky means serenity, a symbol of kindness and welcome of the people.
