The municipality of Nova Petrópolis (21,156 inhabitants in 2018; 29,108 ha)
is located 100 km north-east of Porto Alegre.
Nova Petrópolis was
established on 7 September 1858, short after the end of the Ragamuffin
Revolution in 1845. The name of the colony (New Peter's Town) was a tribute to
Emperor Peter II and to the Royal Town of Petrópolis (Rio de Janeiro), where the
Imperial Court organized its festivals. The colony was designed by the Argentine
land surveyor José Maria Vidal, who was appointed its first director. Plots of
ca. 50 ha were designed along "lihnas" and "picadas", with colonial nuclei
implanted every 10 km as a support to isolated colonies. The seat ("Stadtplatz",
German for "Town Square") was to be established at more or less equal distance
of all nuclei, equipped with shops, workshops, church etc...
An erroneous
evaluation of navigability of rivers Caí and Cadeia and difficulties to build
roads in the colony's mountainous environment significantly slowed down the
colony's initial development, prompting hundreds of immigrants to move
elsewhere. The place remained very isolated and its limited agricultural
production had to be transported to markets using animals.
The
establishment of Porto dos Guimarães on river Caí and of roads allowed the
creation in 1875 of the municipality of São Sebastião do Caí, with Nova
Petrópolis as one of its districts. During the Federalist Revolution, the
colonies were threatened by bands of rascals claiming to support the revolution.
On the German model, Colonel Alfredo Steglich established in Nova Petrópolis a
militia that resisted the assaulters and eventually defeated them. Members of
the militia constituted shooting societies that were officially recognized by
the authorities.
Caixa Rural de Nova Petrópolis was founded in 1902 under the
guidance of Father Theodor Amistad, as Brazil and Latin America's first credit
cooperative. In 1910, the colonists set up a network of phone lines connecting
all colonial nuclei to the centrals of Linha Imperial and Nova Petrópolis, and,
from them, to Linha Nova, São José do Hortêncio and São Sebastião do Caí.
The
municipality of Nova Petrópolis was established in 1954.
