Municipality

The municipality of Lindolfo Collor (5,719 inhabitants in 2016; 3,299 ha, therefore the 3rd smallest municipality in the state by its area) is located 50 km of Porto Alegre.
Lidolfo Collor is considered as the world's leading producer of leather carpets.

Lindolfo Collor was originally established as Picada Capivara, part of Sant'Anna do Rio (today, Capela de Santana), then the 3rd district of Leopoldo. On 4 November 1867, it was transferred to the newly established 4th district of Bom Jardin (today, Ivoti). The place was named for a path established during the forest ("picada") and capybaras probably very common in the area.
The municipality of Lindolfo Collor was established by State Law No. 9,630 promulgated on 20 March 1992.

Symbols

The new municipality was named for Lindolfo Collor (1890-1942), Minister of Labor, Industry and Commerce under President Getúlio Vargas (1930-1932), whom he had supported in the coup against President Washington Luís. Collor pushed significant social reforms, such as the recognition of workers' unions, the set up of arbitration courts for work conflicts and regulation of women and children's work. After the failed Constitutionalist Revolution, he exiled in 1932 to Argentina. Pardoned, he came back to Brazil in 1934, serving in 1936 as Finance Secretary of Rio Grande do Sul. An opponent to Estado Novo, he was jailed in 1938 and 1941. His grandson, Fernando Collor de Mello, was an ephemerous President of Brazil (1990-1992).
