Municipality

The municipality of Arroio dos Ratos (14,151 inhabitants in 2019; 42,521 ha) is located west 60 km of Porto Alegre.

Arroio dos Ratos is self-styled the "Cradle of National Coal Industry". Coal mines were discovered in 1853 by the English engineer James Johnson; for decades, Arroio dos Ratos was the main center of coal industry in Brazil, operating the country's first thermal power plant. After the closure of the mines, coal exploitation was relocated to Charqueadas.
The municipality of Arroio dos Ratos was established on 28 December 1964, separating from São Jeronimo. Coal extraction resumed in 1982.
Arroio dos Ratos hosts the Coal State Museum, inaugurated on 31 March 1986 in the old thermal power plant, which was operated from 1924 to 1956.
Arroio dos Ratos is also known as the "Watermelon National Capital".

Symbols

The flag of Arroio dos Ratos is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 429 promulgated on 25 May 1983.

Article 1.
a) The official width-length proportions shall be the same as for the national flag, that is, 14 x 20.
b) For official ceremonies and daily hoisting together with the flags of Brazil and of the State, the official dimensions shall be 1.60 m in length on 1.12 m in width.

Article 2.
The flag shall be made with a white background, charged in the center with the municipal coat of arms, covering 12 units in width and proportional, in its upper and lower parts, a golden horizontal stripe of 1 module in width and in length the whole flag's length; in the flag's upper and lower parts, a green horizontal stripe of 1 module in width and in length the whole flag's length.
This should be applied to the two sides of the flag.

The coat of arms of Arroio dos Ratos is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 9 promulgated on 9 April 1968.

Article 1. The coat of arms of Arroio dos Ratos shall have the following characteristics and meaning.

Portuguese shield, quartered, in chief, dexter on a field vert (green), stream dos Ratos, the municipality' namesake, referring to the first landowner, Francisco Ratto, wavy argent.
Sinister, on a field azure (blue) the representation of the patron saint in 3/4 clad or with a cloak argent azure, holding dexter a chalice or with a host argent surmounted sinister by a sword or pointing downwards.
In base, or a wagon sable laden with coal sable, symbolizing the origin of the municipality, the old coal mines of James Johnson, Dona Izabel, Poço da Fé and the other subsequently set up and now abandoned.
Sinister, on a field gules (red) the symbols of Industry, Commerce and cattle-breeding, the latter represented by a bovine's head or.

The shield surrounded dexter by a plant of maize with half-opened cobs proper, sinister by a plant of rice proper, fructed. Beneath the shield a scroll vert, gules and or of the colors of the flag of Rio Grande do Sul. On the part gules (red), the writing "ARROIO DOS RATOS" argent.
The shield surmounted by a four-towered mural crown or, symbolizing the status of an autonomous municipality.

The original law was amended by Municipal Law No. 478 promulgated on 24 December 1984.

Article 1.
The scroll argent described in Art. 1 of Law No. 9 promulgated on 9 April 1968 shall be added "28.12" dexter and "1964" sinister, indicating the date of creation of the municipality.

Accordingly, a short-live flag with no dates on the scroll might have existed.
