The municipality of Porto Barreiro (3,659 inhabitants in 2010; 36,189 ha) is
located 400 km west of Curitiba.
The flag and arms of Porto Barreiro are
prescribed by Municipal Law No. 4 promulgated on 6 February 1997.
Article
6.
The flag of the municipality of Porto Barreiro was imagined by José Luzo
da Luz Fernandes, Claudir José Crotti and José Crotti and designed by heraldist
Reynaldo Valascki according to the models and norms of Brazilian municipal
heraldry, pursuant to Federal Law No. 5,700 promulgated on 1 August 1942, with
the following characteristics.
The rectangle forming the flag is divided in
three vertical stripes.
I - The first vertical stripe, at the rectangle's
left, celestial blue, is charged in the upper left canton with a yellow (or)
irregular triangle that symbolizes the material and spiritual resources of the
people of the municipality of Porto Barreiro. The celestial blue color is the
symbol of the firmament and sky that cover the whole municipal territory, and of
areas covered by water in the municipality.
II - The central stripe of the
rectangle, white, symbolizing peace, love, sheerness and religious spirit of the
residents of Porto Barreiro, features in its geometric center the municipal coat
of arms, which symbolizes the seat of the municipality.
III - The third
stripe, at the rectangle's right, celestial blue with the same meaning as
described in item I of this Article, is charged in the lower right canton with a
green irregular triangle, which symbolizes hope, forests and plains, as well as
agriculture existent on the territory of the municipality.
Article 7.
In compliance with heraldic rules, the municipal flag shall have the official
dimensions prescribed for the national flag, 14 units in width on 20 units in
length.
Article 19.
The coat of arms of the municipality of Porto
Barreiro, designed according to the models and norms of Brazilian municipal
heraldry, is described in proper terms as follows.
I - The coat of arms of
the municipality of Porto Barreiro is designed in French modern style, the first
style adopted in Portugal and used as a reference to the main colonizing race
and builder of the Brazilian nation.
II - The mural crown that surmounts it,
golden yellow with five towers visible in perspective view, identifies a
domain's coat of arms and the town as the seat of a municipality.
III - The
shield is divided in four quarters, an escutcheon centered on the upper part,
and two irregular triangles.
IV - The escutcheon features a big book
symbolizing the Holy Bible, representing the religious spirit of Porto
Barreiro's people.
V - The first, upper left quarter features forests and
pastures representing sources of income for the municipality.
VI - The
second, upper right quarter, features a book, a pen and a terrestrial globe,
symbolizing education and culture in Porto Barreiro.
VII - Beneath the
escutcheon, in the shield's center, an irregular triangle features branches of
yerba mate surrounding a mate calabash, representing one of the most salient
customs of Porto Barreiro's people.
VIII - The wavy stripe that divides the
shield represents the municipality's water resources, composed of rivers Novo,
Erva, Guarani, Almoço, Crim, Tapera, Cavernoso and Iguaçu (Salto Santiago dam).
IX - The third, lower left quarter features a field prepared to plant diverse
crops, representing a main source of income for the municipality.
X - The
fourth, lower right quarter features a bovine, a sheep and a pig, symbolizing
animal breeding in the municipality.
XI - The irregular triangle placed in
the shield's central lower part features a handshake, symbolizing force and
union of the constitutive powers of Porto Barreiro.
XII - Beneath the shield
is represented a part of the man-made lake of the Salta Santiago power plant,
which bathes the municipality's extreme south.
XIII - The shield is supported
left by soybean and wheat plants.
XIV - The shield is supported right by
maize and bean plants.
XV - The scroll is surmounted by three gear wheels
representing industry.
XVI - Beneath the shield a green scroll with the
following characteristics.
a) Left, date "13-12 1995", meaning the day, month
and year of promulgation of Law No. 11,248 creating the municipality of Porto
Barreiro.
b) In the center, the toponym "PORTO BARREIRO".
c) Right, date
"01-01 1997", meaning the day, month and year of inauguration of the first Mayor
of the municipality of Porto Barreiro.
