The municipality of Pïnhais (133,490 inhabitants in 2020; 6,087 ha) is located
10 km east of Curitiba.
Pinhais is named for Brazilian pines, once very
common in the region. Municipal Resolution No. 49 issued on 6 November 2003
grants protection to the Brazilian tree located on a plot owned by Associação
Escola Suíço Brasileira de Curitiba.
Considering that araucaria, aka
Paraná pine, has invaluable symbolic meaning for the town of Pinhais, whose name
originates from it and which features it on the arms and flag of the
municipality.
Article 2.
The tree has the following characteristics.
a) c. 300 years of existence, in perfect condition, being probably the region's
oldest tree.
b) diameter, 2.28 m ans circumference, 7.16 m.

The flag and arms of Pinhais are prescribed by Municipal Law No.
6 promulgated on 15 March 1993.
Article 2.
The coat of arms of the
municipality of Pinhais, designed by Douglas Macarthur de Oliveira Boechat and
heraldically interpreted by ESIMPAR - Enciclopédia Simbológica Municipalista
Paranaense, has the following characteristics:
§1. The shield is of
Portuguese type, horizontally divided into two unequal fields arranged as
follows.
§2. The upper field, blue, features in the center, a yellow (or)
rising sun with five straight rays, illuminating in perspective three green
pines of unequal sizes, placed in the center and making the arms canting.
I -
The sun means unity, majesty, abundance and wealth, representing the new era
that begins for Pinhais and its residents.
II - The pines correspond to the
toponym "Pinhais".
§3. The shield's lower field is vertically divided into
two equal parts, on the right, yellow with a fleur-de-lis argent (white) and on
the left, green with a wheel or (yellow) with 12 cogs.
I - The fleur-de-lis
argent represents the town's patron saint, Our Lady of Good Hope.
II - The
cogwheel or represents industrial activity, the main source of income for the
municipality.
§4. The shield is surmounted by a mural crown with eight
towers, of which five are visible, argent (white) with black doors signifying
the constituted powers of the municipality of Pinhais.
§5. Beneath the shield
a blue scroll inscribed with the inscriptions "PINHAIS", in the center, and
"20-03" on the left and "1992" on the right, representing the date of foundation
of the Municipality.
Article 3.
The flag of the municipality of
Pinhais, designed by Douglas Macarthur de Oliveira Boechat and heraldically
interpreted by ESIMPAR - Enciclopédia Simbológica Municipalista Paranaense,
shall be rectangular, in proportions 14 units in width on 20 units in length.
Article 4.
The flag is composed of two equal fields shaped like a scalene
right-angled triangle, separated by a white stripe of 3 units in width,
containing in its center a white circle where the coat of arms is applied.
§1. The upper triangle is green and the lower one blue.
§2. The white stripe,
superimposed with a yellow stripe 1 unit in width, which separates the green
from the blue field, starts from the upper right angle (hoist side), running
obliquely to the left angle.
§3. The geometric figure in the center of the
flag where the coat of arms is applied, representing the municipal government,
is a white circle that symbolizes infinity, as it has no beginning or end.

by Municipal Law No. 439 promulgated on 18 June 2001.
Article 2.
§3.

gear wheel or (yellow) with 12 cogs.
II - The gear wheel or represents
industrial activity, the main source of income for the municipality.
§6. The
colors of the coat of arms have the following meaning.
I - Yellow means the
resources of the municipality.
II - Green means the municipal forests present
in the municipality.
III - Blue means the sky and springs of the
municipality.
Article 4.
§4. The colors of the flag have the following
meaning.
I - Yellow means the resources of the municipality.
II - Blue
means the sky and springs of the municipality.
III - Green means the
municipal forests of the municipality.
IV - White means the municipality's
promising future and infinity.

The description of the symbols was further
completed by Municipal Law No. 1,065 promulgated on 5 March 2010.
Article 2.
§2.
II - The pines correspond to the toponym "Pinhais" and are artistically
configured to look like araucarias, native trees under legal protection.
§5.
Beneath the shield a blue scroll inscribed in white with the inscriptions
"PINHAIS", in capital letters, in the center, and "20-03" on the left and "1992"
on the right, representing the date of foundation of the Municipality.
