About the Flag

The municipality of Guaratuba (37,974 inhabitants in 2021; 132,588 ha), located 120 km south-east of Curitiba on the border with Santa Catarina, is Paraná's southernmost coastal municipality.

The flag of Guaratuba is blue, quartered by a saltire forming four trapezoidal geometric figures, cantonned with four red flying scarlet ibises ["guarás"]. The quarters are formed by four yellow stripes placed two by two in bend and bend sinister, starting from a central yellow rectangle inscribing the coat of arms.
In compliance with the Portuguese heraldic tradition, of which we inherited canons and rules, municipal flags shall be divided in eight, four or six parts, charged in the center with the town's coat of arms in heraldic colors, the colors being the same as those of the shield's field.
The flag of the municipality of Guaratuba obeys this rule, being quartered in saltire [description repeated].
The coat of arms in the flag's center symbolizes the municipal government (executive and legislative) while the rectangle that inscribes it represents the town proper as the seat of the municipality. The stripes symbolize the spread of municipal power to all the parts of the territory, while the quarters represent the rural estates existing on the municipal territory.
Blue is the heraldic symbol of justice, nobleness, recreation, zeal and loyalty.
Yellow represents glory, splendor, wealth and sovereignty.

The coat of arms of Guaratuba is composed of a Samnite shield surmounted by a stylized six-towered mural crown argent. The field argent features in chief three stylized flying scarlet ibises in base on a blue sea with white waves a caravel sable with sails featuring the cross of the Order of Christ gules, heading dexter to a rock sable ensigned by a fortification wall gules armed with a cannon sable.
The shield supported dexter and sinister by two seahorses vert outlined or. Beneath the shield a scroll azure inscribed argent with the toponym "Guaratuba" surrounded by dates "29-4" and foundation year "1771".
The Samnite shield used to represent the arms of Guaratuba was the first style of shield introduced to Portugal by French influence, evoking here the colonizing race and main builder of the Brazilian nation.
The mural crown surmounting it is the universal symbol of domains' coats of arms; argent with six towers, only four of them visible in perspective view, it classifies a 3rd rank town, seat of a municipality.
Argent is the heraldic symbol of friendship, peace, innocence, purity and work.
