The municipality of Guaraniaçu (14,583 inhabitants in 2010; 122,561 ha) is
located 425 km west of Curitiba.
Guaraniaçu was settled in Rocinha (1919)
and Mato Queimado (1920). From 1922 to 1925, the area was the front line between
rebelled Prestes Column and the Brazilian troops, which were stationed in
Bormann. The seat of the municipal administration was then fiercely disputed
between Rocinha and Mato Queimlado, with several casualties; the seat was
eventually transferred to a new settlement called Planalto.
The
municipality of Guaraniaçu was established by State Law No. 790 promulgated on
14 November 1951, separating from Laranjeiras do Sul.
Guaraniaçu is said to
have been named for rivers Gurani and Iguaçu. Another explanation relates the
town's name to Tupi-Guarani words meaning "a tall Indian".

The flag of Guaraniaçu is composed of the following
elements:
- a blue rectangle;
- a yellow lozenge;
- a white sphere at
the lozenge's right side;
- a blue stripe above the sphere's center charged
with the name of the municipality of Guaraniaçu in white letters;
- five blue
stars, one in the north, above the blue stripe, three beneath the stripe and
another one south of the sphere, displayed like the Southern Cross
constellation;
- two wheat plats at the sphere's left emerging from the left
point of the scroll placed beneath the sphere; the wheat grains are represented
in dark orange yellow and the leaves and stems in plant green.
Blue is a
symbol of serenity, tranquility, power and work.
Yellow is the symbol of
mining and agricultural resource, which are signs of progress.
The wheat
plants symbolize the main source of income.
White is a symbol of peace, love,
culture, which are signs of development.
The sphere symbolizes the
municipality, being in the center with a nucleus of stars representing the
districts.
The stars represent the Southern Cross in its usual representation
in Brazil.
The blue stripe symbolizes the sky lit by the sun.
The white
scroll symbolizes political emancipation, knowledge, and the legislative,
executive and judiciary powers.
