Description of the Flag

Mary Clare Bonham, a high school junior, placed first in a competition of 65 entrants with her design of a lone pine tree in green, on a horizontal tricolor of green, white, and green. It was first flown at a city celebration on 4 July 1938. The city's practice of painting this green-white-green-with-pine-tree motif on park benches, trashcans, signs, city vehicles, and so forth -- as well as some restrictive local laws -- have earned this Washington suburb the local nickname of 'The People's Republic of Greenbelt.'

History of Greenbelt

Greenbelt is a planned community, one of the first in the nation, established in 1937 under Roosevelt's 'New Deal' grants, and touted as a 'City of the Future' by films shown at the New York World's Fair in 1939.
