Members of the City Commission who were not happy with any concepts previously offered say they are on board with a new flag design by Redhead Creative Consultancy. The new design adds the city logo in a white field that carried no reference to Mount Clemens in the first effort.

Cheap. Uninspired. Dreary. Those are some of the comments made by Mount Clemens city commissioners in response to the appearance of a proposed city flag.

The leading design does not seem to have city council support, however.

The teal-colored flag was part of a brand redesign of the city logo and letterhead templates using colors and designs previously selected by the commissioners. But judging by their reaction to about a half-dozen of the proposed flag looks, some members of the Mount Clemens City Commission weren’t happy with the design.

The flag design was part of an overall marketing effort from Lansing-based Redhead Creative Consultancy. Commissioners hired the marketing firm earlier this year and approved the new logo and colors, but the flag was dealt with separately. Commissioner Glen Voorhess was puzzled why the flag didn’t include the city’s name.

A motion to approve the new flag died on a 3-3 vote, with Mayor Laura Kropp and commissioners Laura Fournier and Rashida Hammond voting for it. It wasn’t clear if the city manager will ask for the flag to be reworked or if the item will be voted on once Dempsey returns to break the tie.

About 17 minutes 40 seconds into a video of a city council meeting held on November 15, 2021, to discuss the adoption of a new flag, is a flag that differs from those on this page. This flag uses a city seal that has not yet been found.

During the process to introduce the 2021 flag, City Manager Don Johnson and City Clerk Kathleen Martin poured over minutes of past city commission and couldn’t find any mention of the past flag being formally approved. “That means the flag you select on December 6, may be the very first official flag of the City of Mount Clemens,” Johnson wrote in the agenda packet.
