Presentation of Erdut

The municipality of Erdut (8,417 inhabitants in 2001, 964 in the village of Erdut) is located some 30 km east of Osijek. The municipality encompasses the Dilj mountain, a low hill around which the Danube (being the eastern border of the municipality) makes a large curve and where Drava flowes into it, forming the northern border of the municipality. The four settlements in the municipality are also situated in the lowlands around the hill at the four cardinal points: Erdut in the east, Aljmaš in the north, Dalj in the south and Bijelo Brdo in the west.
The Erdut Agreement, signed on 12 November 1995, arranged the peaceful reintegration of the Serb-held Eastern Slavonia region tpo Croatia. In July 1991 all the Croatian population left the area under the pressure of the Yugoslav Army and the region was held by rebel Serbs until the reintegration. After the Erdut Agreement, the refugees gradually returned to their homes, the UN Transitional Administration in Eastern Slavonia (UNTAES) was established as the authority to perform the transition, completed in January 1998. The municipality of Erdut still has a slight majority of Serb population (almost 54% according to 2001 census) and also a Hungarian minority (just above 5%). Therefore there beside the flag of Croatia and of the municipality, the flags of the two ethnic groups are also used officially.
