Meaning:
Dassel was seat of the Counts of Dassel until 1310, when the city was acquired by the Bishops of Hildesheim. In 1315 Dassel gained city rights from Bishop Heinrich of Wohldenberg. At the end of the 14th century a seal was made, showing St. Lawrence, the patron saint of the city, with a gridiron. In 1523 the city became a possession of the Dukes of Braunschweig, and a new seal appeared in the early 17th century, displaying the antler and six balls, taken from the family arms of the Counts of Dassel. The twelve balls were introduced in 1596.
