The city was established in 1719 and became the seat of the Princes of Waldeck in 1728, represented by the star. The original arms, used from the 18th century until 1938 ,displayed only the current inescutcheon under an impending Trinity-Eye, an eyed triangle surrounded by solar-rays. The Trinity-Eye was interpreted as a symbol of the freemasons and thus abolished in 1938 and replaced by the oak tree. The tree was representing the slogan "City in the Forest", not only the local forests but also the clean air, furthermore fact that the city is a spa, based on clean air and water.
