Coat of arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a red shield are two golden (=yellow) leopards (I would prefer the term: lion statant guardant). According to source the leopards are armed blue, according to Ralf Hartemink in the new version they are also tongued blue. I can't reconfirm both. The leopards I spotted were neither armed nor tongued blue. Furthermore the shield was topped by a blue helmet with a red vizor. The helmet was crested by a golden (=yellow) and a blue paddle, topped by a golden (=yellow) coronet. Furthermore the helmet had blue and golden (=yellow) scarves. All these details outside the shield are not mentioned in any source I found. But they can be seen also on the photos within Stefan Schwoon's database.
Meaning:
According to source duke Otto of Braunschweig-Lüneburg granted the rights of a city in 1247. Since 1255, the leopards, here explicitely denoted as "lions statant guardant", are known from seals. They were an old symbol of the Welfen kin. Beginning in the 14th century the leopards had been replaced by a single, blue, rampant lion in a golden field, the newer symbol of the kin. Up to "newer times", whatever that means, the leopards could be found on the main seal, the single lion on smaller seals. The first coloured images of the arms can be proven stone carved in 1592 and as decoration of a tumbler in 1602.
