It is, for me, the first occurrence of a beaver (canting here) with heraldic attributes, that is armed and langued gules. Identification of the animal is not facilitated (but see the tail), but we should not expect accurate description of animals in heraldry.

Coat of Arms

Shield Azure, a beaver rampant Argent, armed and tongued Gules.
Meaning:
The beaver (German: Bieber) is a canting element. He appears already in the oldest court seal with prints in 1578. Newer armourials displayed the beaver black in a golden shield. The current colours were fixed in 1957 and are alluding to those of the Counts of Katzenelnbogen. The city was first mentioned in 1267 and the counts had been liege lords since then. In 1312 Count Diether of Katzenelnbogen gained city rights for Groß-Bieberau from Emperor Heinrich VII, which remained however defunct. Under the rule of Hesse the location had the rank of a market town since 1479. The city rights were regained in 1962.
