Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
Shield Or, a shepherd with garment Gules, coat Azure, hat, staff and sabots Sable.
Meaning:
The arms were approved in the 1960s and are based on the older seal of the town, which displayed a shepherd without a shield. Sheep herding was an important business line in the area for many centuries, hence the choice of the shepherd. The colours are derived from the colours of the Bishopric of Münster and the Grand-Duchy of Oldenburg, to which the town historically belonged. The flag colours are those of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg.
