Dornum Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a golden (= yellow) shield is a black, rampant bear, armed and tongued red, wearing a golden (= yellow) collar with an oversized annulet of the same colour.
Meaning:
The bear is taken from the arms of the Attena kin, whose memebers had been the first chieftains of Dornum. Dornum had been a market town (Flecken) until 2001. It formed the comprehensive municipality of Dornum together with the market town of Nesse and the municipality of Dornumersiel from 2 August 1972 until 31 October 2001.

According to Hans van Hejningen Dornum had no proper flag before 2004. The coat of arms was approved by Regierungspräsident Aurich in 1961 for the market town and in 2001 overtaken by the municipality
