On 1 January 2017 Oberschrot and Zumholz became part of Plaffeien, and a new emblem was introduced.

Unlike all other communes in Switzerland, Plaffeien also has a flag which is not a banner of arms. Having a flag more colourful is the reason given to explain why this design has been chosen. The flag currently in use in Plaffeien is a light blue flamed flag with the coat of arms in the center.
