Background

Gaborone is the capital, and largest city, in Botswana.  It is located in the south-eastern corner of the country about 15km from the South African border. Because the city had no tribal affiliation and was close to fresh water, the city was planned to be the capital in the mid-1960s as soon as the Bechuanaland Protectorate became independent.  Prior to independence, the protectorate was ruled from Mafikeng in neighbouring South Africa.  The headquarters of the Southern African Development Community are located in the city.

The flag of Gaborone is light blue with the municipal Coat of Arms in the center. The light blue is the same colour as the national flag of Botswana.  Both this flag and the national flag fly in front of  the "Civic Centre" in Gaborone's Business District (Central Gaborone).
