Municipality

The municipality of Nova Roma do Sul (3,584 inhabitants in 2016; 14,906 ha) is located 160 km north of Porto Alegre.

Nova Roma do Sul was first settled in 1880 by Polish, Swedish and Russian colonists. Italian immigrants arrived in 1888 soon formed the majority of the settlers. Nova Roma do Sul belonged to the municipality of Antônio Prado; the colonization commission divided the territory in eight "linhas" and established 14 communities, each with its own chapel. Castro Alves was the first seat of the colony; in 1894, the transfer of the seat to Nova Treviso, in Linha Blessmann initiated a fierce rivalry between the two settlements.
In 6 January 1899, Father Alexandre Pelegrini, with the governor's permission, established the settlement of Nova Roma in Lihas Carlos Leopoldo, in a site located between Castro Alves and Nova Treviso. Nova Roma was elevated on 19 January 1923 as the 2nd district of Antônio Prado.
The municipality of Nova Roma do Sul was established on 30 November 1987 and inaugurated on 1 January 1989.

Article 1.
The coat of arms of the town and municipality of Nova Roma do Sul is constituted of a Portuguese shield argent, crossed in the center by a fess serrated vert. In chief, a detail of the frontispiece of the St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, sable. In base, a tapir over waves azure.
The shield surmounted by a five-towered mural crown argent.
The shield supported by grapevines vert.
Beneath the shield a red scroll inscribed "1880 - Nova Roma do Sul - 1987". The first date recalls the initiation of settlement by Polish, Swedish and Russian colonists; the second date recalls the municipality's political emancipation.

The charges of the shield's field symbolize the municipality's ethnic and cultural origins, faith, work, economy, natural environment and history, as follows: in chief, the Italian colonization initiated in 1886, represented by the town's namesake; in the center, the mountains where the municipality is located; in base, Tapirs' River and the animal species most commonly found in the region, also symbolizing commitment to the preservation of natural environment. The supporters are a reference to progress based on the soil's resources. The mural crown and the scroll represent the political rank and administrative history of the municipality.
